Digital loyalty cards in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet

Choose a reward model, share an enrollment link, test saving and redeeming a card, and measure a small loyalty pilot before expanding it.

What is a wallet loyalty card?

A digital loyalty card is a pass a customer saves in their phone's wallet to identify their membership and view stamps, points or benefits, depending on the program. Apple Wallet supports eligible passes, including rewards cards; Google Wallet supports loyalty, rewards and membership cards. The business and its loyalty platform define how customers earn and redeem benefits. [1] [2]

BlackCards provides business loyalty cards for Apple Wallet and Google Wallet and presents stamps, points and memberships among its card types. Customers can save a card from a link or QR code. A program without a separate customer app means customers do not need to install an app specifically for your business. An Android user may still need to download and set up Google Wallet. [3] [4]

Choose stamps, points or membership to fit the purchase

Choose a model an employee can explain in one sentence and the business can verify consistently. The comparison below is an operating decision, not a promise that every advanced rule is included in every plan. Confirm the rules your provider can support before advertising them.

  • Stamps: useful to test when customers repeat a similar qualifying purchase, such as a particular drink or a recurring service. Define whether one stamp means one visit, one item or a minimum purchase. The cashier should not have to decide this on the spot.
  • Points: worth considering when bill values vary and you want rewards to reflect spending. You need a clear earning rule, an understandable redemption value and a way to correct returns. Without reliable transaction data or a practical way to enter it, points can add work at the counter.
  • Membership: useful when the main promise is a defined set of benefits over a stated period. Explain eligibility, validity, renewal and the limits of each benefit. Calling a card VIP does not explain what a customer receives.

Write the reward rules and calculate the cost first

Before choosing card colors, write a short rule sheet for the manager and staff. An illustrative program might award one stamp for an eligible drink and a specified free drink after six stamps. Six is an example that makes the workflow concrete, not a number that guarantees profitability or a commercial offer from BlackCards.

Calculate what providing the reward actually costs your business, then add the subscription cost and operating time. If a hypothetical free drink costs four units of your business's currency to provide, 15 redeemed rewards cost 60 units before other expenses. Use the cost of fulfilling the reward in this calculation, and keep it separate from the menu price and revenue. This example is not BlackCards pricing.

  • Which purchase qualifies, and which products or transactions are excluded?
  • When is credit added, who may add it, and who can correct an error?
  • What exactly is the reward, and does redemption require another purchase?
  • Which locations participate, when does the benefit expire, and can it be combined with offers?
  • How will staff handle a canceled order, a return or an attempted duplicate redemption?

Prepare for the Gulf market where you actually operate

Start with one location and languages your customers and employees understand. Keep the reward promise equivalent in Arabic and English, and check text direction, location names, currency and phone dialing codes. Whether your business operates in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain or Oman, build the rules around that location's transactions and customer service, then review them before applying them elsewhere.

Before launching in your country, confirm merchant plan availability, support and billing, then test devices your customers use. Google distinguishes Wallet app availability from the availability of particular cards and features by country, device and supporting partner. Access to the wallet alone does not establish support for every loyalty program. [5]

Ask customers only for information needed to operate the program and explain why it is collected. Provide a clear route for account or data corrections. Saving a pass should not be treated as an assumed agreement to every kind of marketing message; review the service's policy and actual settings before collecting additional fields.

Keep the enrollment QR separate from the customer's card code

The QR code on your counter opens the program's enrollment link. The code inside a customer's pass identifies that customer's card during service, according to the system's setup. Explain the difference when training staff. Using a customer's card code in place of the enrollment link prevents correct enrollment and may associate service actions with the wrong card.

Put a clear invitation beside the enrollment code, such as 'Scan to join and save your loyalty card.' Print one sample at the intended size and test it under the lighting where it will be displayed. Open the link on a phone and confirm the correct business name before printing the full batch.

  • Test with an iPhone and an Android phone, and provide a written link for someone who cannot scan the code.
  • If you start enrollment on a computer, use the wallet link or QR provided to continue adding the pass on your phone.
  • Give employees the designated staff tool. A public demo control page should not be used to operate real customer rewards.

Add a pass to Apple Wallet on iPhone

Open the eligible pass link on an iPhone and use the Apple Wallet action. These are the general addition steps documented by Apple; screen details may vary with the pass and operating system version. [1]

  • Open the business's link or scan its enrollment code, then complete the required fields to reach the customer's pass.
  • Select Add to Apple Wallet and review the business name and pass information.
  • Follow the instructions on the phone, including the final Add action if it is requested.
  • Open Wallet and check that the card is present. Clicking the addition button alone does not establish that a customer completed the save.

Add a pass to Google Wallet on Android

First check that you have a valid Google Account and Google Wallet set up on a supported device, with current Wallet and Google Play services versions. The flow may ask you to download Wallet if it is not installed. Check Google's current requirements when preparing test devices. [4] [6]

  • Open the enrollment link or scan the business's code, then complete the information required to issue the pass.
  • Choose Save to Google Wallet or the displayed addition action, using the Google Account where you want to keep the card.
  • Review the on-screen instructions and terms and complete the save.
  • Open Wallet and verify the card and business name. Record this result separately from the creation of a save link. [6]

Test earning and redemption from both sides of the counter

The journey is complete when the employee can perform the action and the customer can understand its result. BlackCards describes a stamp flow where staff add a stamp for a qualifying visit and the customer redeems a reward after completing the card. Confirm the actual scanner flow and permissions in your merchant account before training the team. [3]

  • Display a test card on the customer's phone and open the designated employee account or scanner for that location.
  • Verify the card and qualifying transaction, then add one stamp or the correct credit.
  • Check the system's balance and then the wallet's display. Record when the action occurred and when the update appeared. Do not award another stamp merely because the display is delayed.
  • When a reward is earned, check the current balance in the program, perform redemption once and provide the reward under the stated rules.
  • Check the balance after redemption, and test how staff report a mistake and how the responsible person corrects it. An old screenshot of a pass is not sufficient proof of current eligibility.

What can the BlackCards demo help you assess?

The current public demo starts with a business style, a business name and a mobile number with its dialing code. Apple Wallet and Google Wallet actions appear according to the device and availability of the provider link; the interface may show that a provider is currently unavailable. It also has controls for adding a stamp and redeeming a demonstration reward after six stamps. It helps explain the journey; the demo balance is not a reward redeemable at a real business. [7]

Start with your own details and device. Keep the control page open, save the pass and use the add-stamp action to observe the result. For iPhone, the demo displays device registration status; check that before testing an update. Record the device, operating system and outcome instead of generalizing one phone's result to all customers. [7]

If the pass will not save or the balance does not change

Identify the stage that stopped: issuing the card, saving it, recording the stamp or displaying the updated balance. Keeping these separate helps prevent an accidental extra award while someone tries to refresh the screen.

  • No addition action: check that the link is for a wallet-supported pass, then contact its issuer. Apple directs users to the issuer when the addition option is missing. [1]
  • Google Wallet rejects the save: check the account, device requirements and app, and retain the exact error message. If the issue is with the pass itself, contact the issuer. [4] [6]
  • The stamp is recorded but the pass shows the old balance: open the current pass, check connectivity and save or registration status, and ask support to check the update. Do not grant a second stamp as a screen refresh.
  • The demo says its session expired or reached a limit: follow the action shown by the interface. Demo limits do not establish the limits of a merchant subscription. [7]
  • The pass was deleted or the customer changed phones: recover the existing membership with the business before creating another one. Test re-adding the pass and retaining its balance in advance. Do not assume deletion cancels membership or every pass transfers automatically.

A balance update is different from a delivered notification

Track three separate events in your test: the loyalty system records the action, the pass displays its new balance, and a notification appears to the customer. Apple explains that pass updates involve the issuer's service, Apple's servers and the registered device. Success at one stage does not demonstrate that the phone displayed the result. [8]

Google Wallet alerts require notifications to be enabled and are subject to provider limits. Google's documentation permits up to three messages that trigger a notification per pass within 24 hours and allows throttling for spam. This is a provider limit, not a recommended messaging schedule or a promise of delivery. [9]

Start with a specific reason to contact the customer, such as a reward becoming ready, and review what actually appears on the phone. A successful send is not a confirmed read. Do not report open rates unless a reliable measurement is available.

Run a small pilot that measures operation and return visits

Begin with one location and one reward. One possible design is to enroll participants over two weeks and then give every participant the same 30-day observation window. Do not compare someone who joined yesterday with someone who joined a month ago. The suggested window is not suitable for every business; a salon with longer service intervals needs an observation period that reflects that cycle.

Record enrollment date, the internal customer identifier, qualifying visits, redemptions and errors. Keep staff and demonstration records separate from real customer activity. If the system cannot measure completed saves on a device, label that metric unavailable. You can record a separately observed sample without presenting it as measurement of every registered customer.

  • Enrollment completion: completed enrollments divided by enrollment starts, if both events are tracked reliably. Show both counts alongside the percentage.
  • Return within 30 days: among customers whose full observation window has elapsed, divide those with a later qualifying visit inside that window by all customers in the same completed cohort. Define a visit so multiple stamps from one bill do not become multiple visits.
  • Reward redemption: select the rewards earned during a defined period, then divide the number redeemed from that cohort by the total earned in it, showing the follow-up period. Keep redemption separate from merely reaching the required balance.
  • Operating cost: the actual cost of redeemed rewards, the subscription cost allocated to the period, and staff time. Track recording mistakes and duplicate attempts separately.
  • If data is missing or a denominator is zero, report the metric as unavailable and explain why. Always show the size of a small sample rather than publishing an isolated percentage.

Decide what to expand and what to fix

Expand when the rules are understandable, staff can award and redeem correctly, errors can be corrected, balances reconcile, and the reward cost is acceptable for your business. If enrollment fails, fix that journey first. If people enroll but do not return as expected, review the reward, purchase cycle and clarity of the terms before increasing message volume.

Change one factor at a time and record its date. Before-and-after results can be affected by seasonality, promotions and location traffic, so do not attribute every increase to loyalty. A stronger causal assessment requires an appropriate comparison between groups while accounting for other differences.

Questions to resolve before launch

  • Is a loyalty pass Apple Pay or a payment method? No. The pass described here identifies membership and rewards. Saving it does not activate payment acceptance or connect a point-of-sale system.
  • Does scanning the card require NFC? Optical scanning reads the displayed code. NFC redemption requires an appropriate flow, reader and support. A card's presence in a wallet does not establish that BlackCards offers NFC.
  • Can the program run without internet access? Do not design earning and redemption around that assumption. A wallet may display a saved pass, but the current balance still needs to be checked and the action recorded in the program. Test connection loss and define the location's procedure in advance.
  • Does saving a card automatically integrate the till or appointment system? No. Ask which integration is actually available, what data it exchanges and how cancellations are handled before relying on it.
  • How can existing paper stamps be moved? Set a transition period and validation rule, record the approved balance once against the customer, and mark the paper card as transferred. Confirm the entry method your system supports before announcing the move. This is a proposed operating procedure, not a claim that BlackCards provides automatic imports.
  • Does a successful wallet save prove the loyalty program works? It establishes that one step completed. Also assess correct use, return visits, redemption and cost over a defined period, then expand using your business's evidence.
